My Favorite Aunt
I had a dream the day before my Aunt Pat’s birthday this month. She passed earlier this year after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. She was my favorite aunt. Not just because she was into metaphysical things before anyone else in my family — she also stepped in when my mom couldn’t, when we were kids.
She was my mom’s younger sister. But from the time my mom was paralyzed at nine years old, my aunt was the one taking care of her. My aunt became the “older sister.” We grew up close to her and her kids. We even lived at my grandmother’s house with them at times. And when I was in elementary school she lived down the block and across the street.
Aunt Pat loved to tell the story of us coming over to see what she was having for dinner. If my sister and I liked it better than what my mom was cooking, we’d tell her my mom said we could eat at her house that night.
She was fun and cool — she went to bluegrass concerts and bought me my first Beatles album. There were her company picnics too, with free food and rides all day. And after she moved to San Carlos, we spent whole days at the Santa Clara Swim Center. Water is still my happy place.
Later, when I started my own therapy and then my own metaphysical journey, she was right there beside me. That’s why it was so hard when she started slipping away.
She Visited Me in My Dream
In my dream I was hugging her as I dropped her off at her house — and we were both sobbing. I said, “I don’t know why I’m so sad. I know I’ll see you again soon.”
When I woke up I knew it was a visit. I miss her and I wish she were here. But she was letting me know we’ll be seeing each other soon — because this life is just a flash, really.
Our Life Between Lives is our real life. This earth life is where we come to advance our soul’s development, to practice whatever we’re working on over there — like developing compassion or courage. Once this life ends we return to our true home — our Life Between Lives — where we’re with our Soul Group and the people we love. We are all ONE. There’s no separation. Ever.
We Lose Our Fear of Death
We discover that death is not the end. When I ask people in their sessions what it felt like to die, most say it was a relief. It’s sort of like taking off one set of clothes and putting on another. We don’t stop existing. We just go back home. And the reunion is always incredible — and often tearful.
People often find Life Between Lives after a loss. I know I did. There’s so much comfort in knowing this life is just a nano-second in the big picture of my soul journey. And we’ll all be back together again before we know it.
